Methods of Medication Delivery in Assisted Living Residences Pt. II of II

Presenters: Jeanne Donohoe, North East Pharmacy Services & Lori Tetreault, NH Board of Nursing

 

ALRs must ensure that residents received medications as ordered by a licensed provider. Medication services are determined based on the level of care required and functional ability. This presentation will provide information and clarity to assist moving forward with medication services that will be carried out in compliance with both He-P 804 & 805 rules as well as the rules of the NH Board of Nursing.

 

During this session, presenters will review the methods in which residents may receive their medications. The role of the Medication Certified Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA-MC) and Personal Care Assistant (PCA) when assisting residents with medication services will be discussed. Nursing delegation will be identified with methods that require assistance to ensure residents receive their medications as ordered.

 

Time has been allotted at the end of the program for questions from the audience.

 

Participants will learn:

 

  • To define “Administer” in relation to medication delivery as defined in He-P 804.03(c) & 804.03(c).

  • To describe the four methods in which residents receive their medications in an ALR.

  • The role of the licensed nurse utilizing nursing delegation as described in RSA 326-B:28 and Nur 404.03-404.10.

  • The difference between the role of an LNA-MC and a PCA.

 

Jeanne Donohoe, RN has been the nurse consultant for North East Pharmacy Services (NEPS) since May 2013. NEPS is a specialty pharmacy dedicated to meeting the needs of assisted living providers. As their nurse consultant, Jeanne performs medication administration record audits and pre-survey reviews per facility request. She brings the perspective of having been an Assisted Living Executive Director of two homes and as the Licensing Supervisor for the Health Facility Licensing Unit. She brings extensive knowledge of He-P 804 & 805 regulations and RSA 151 statute to her current position. She is also able to draw upon her experiences in geropsych, home care, quality assurance, and utilization review.Jeanne was the Licensing Supervisor for DHHS Health Facility Licensing Unit from 2007-13. She is a past Executive Director for Maplewood Assisted Living and Prospect Place Assisted Living. She has served on the NHARCH Board of Directors in the past and currently is an advisor to that Board.

Lori Tetreault, RN has been the LNA Program Specialist at The NH Board of Nursing since 2009. Her nursing experience has been directly focused on the practice and education of the LNA in several educational and healthcare settings. Lori has influenced the education of Nursing Assistants in the classroom and clinical settings resulting in enhanced patient care. Lori holds a BSN and has held nursing leadership positions in healthcare inclding in ALRs for over 20 years.

Touch is probably the most unappreciated of all our senses. Yet science is showing that it has amazing healing properties. In a world of technology, we are getting further away from touching. Touch evokes emotion, pleasure, pain and sensuality – it's a way of communicating; a basic form of human interaction that crosses social, cultural, gender and racial barriers.

 

Touching involves the skin. The skin is the largest organ of the body, with a total area of about 20 square feet.

 

Participants will:

 

  • Learn at least 4 types of Healing Therapies that involve touching.

  • Experience the healing effects of touch therapy

  • Learn how Healing Therapies can enhance Traditional Western Medicine.

  • Learn about the effects Touch Deprivation.

  • Learn about Reiki and it’s use with children, adults and elderly as well as animals, pets.

 

Cheryl Barnes started her career as an RN at Concord Hospital. She then started working at various LTC facilities as a Nurse Manager or DNS and has continued in this field for over 30 years. Cheryl has earned her Reiki Master Teacher Certificate and has taught several Reiki classes at Level 2 though Reiki Master Teacher. She has also attended many complimentary programs including Polarity therapy, Massage, Reflexology, Therapeutic Touch, Acupressure, and others.

Presenter: A Specialist from Smith & Nephew Wound Management

 

This session will review critical components of wound assessment, including pressure ulcer staging, wound measurement and identification of various tissue types. Accurate wound assessment is of paramount importance to ensure accurate communication between clinicians when choosing an appropriate management plan and recognizing the need for a change in care.

 

Particpants will learn:

 

  • The purpose for wound assessment

  • Important components of wound assessment and documentation·

  • Documentation methods for wound assessment

 

Cynthia Fernandez earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing and Masters in Health Services Administration from the University of Central Florida. She started her nursing career as a critical care / trauma nurse 25 years ago and used her knowledge to explore many fields in nursing including hyperbarics, hydrotherapy and outpatient services. While working herself up the managerial chain, she attended Emory University’s WOC nursing program and obtained her certification. It was her openness to new opportunities that led her to open a private practice focusing in the fields of legal/ risk management/ Medicare and commercial payor networks, clinical research, and wound care consulting along with physicians in acute care, SNFs and home health markets. These experiences allowed her to explore a career in industry working, in various clinical and business roles, with companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Covidien and now Smith & Nephew. In her current role as a Clinical Resource Coordinator, she works with both internal and external customers in the fields of advanced wound care, sales, project management and reimbursement to educate their customers across the continuum of care.
